Under the Southern Cross:

The New Testament in Australian English

In recent decades speakers of Australian English have been provided with a dictionary of their particular form of the English language (Macquarie Dictionary, 1981) as well as a grammar (Pam Peters The Cambridge Australian English style guide, 1995).

Under the Southern Cross is the first complete translation of the New Testament from the Greek in which its writings were composed into Australian English. Based on the earliest form of the text as reconstructed from the rich New Testament textual resources available in over 5,000 Greek manuscripts, it aspires to express in contemporary Australian English the twenty-seven writings making up the New Testament. Consistent with contemporary Australian English and society, it is an inclusive language translation.

It pays particular attention to the translation of the key family of words by which the apostle Paul expressed his doctrine of ‘justification by faith.’
